Children's Programs and Education

Baptism, the sign of entry into the Christian Church, is offered once in a lifetime for either infants or adults on a requested date. Both Pastor consultation and Session approval are prerequisites for this sacrament.

Confirmation Classes
For eight/ninth graders considering the meaning of becoming a church member, weekly confirmation classes are held during the year. A service of confirmation is held at the completion of the class.

Childcare for infants to age 3 is available on Sundays from 9:15 am until 11:45 am in our Nursery near the sanctuary. Ask an usher for directions.

Sunday School
Children in preschool through fifth grade begin in worship and then proceed to class after the children's message. Youth classes will be held after worship. classes and worship are modeled after the same four movements: gathering: a time of welcome, song and prayer; engaging: a time of in depth exploring of the daily scripture and its connection to our lives; responding: an active time of hands on learning and personal reflection; and blessing; a time for reviewing and ending with a prayer and blessing.

Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School takes place for one week each summer for children entering kindergarten through grade six. It is a theme based Bible school, which runs in late June or early July. Adults have as much fun as the kids. Wouldn't you like to take part as an adult staff member, teen helper, or student? Planning begins in late January.

Youth Group
Activities for middle school and high school students are offered throughout the year, and are typically are run by our youth leader. See the newsletter and bulletin for times. These activities include snacks and are run by our youth leader. Junior/Senior High Fellowship involves recreational outings and service projects. A week-long Senior High Work Trip takes place in the summer. Our youth ministry is under the direction of our youth session committee. The committee is in the process of recruiting a youth leader. For information contact the office at 412-561-4114.

Adult Education

Adult Education
The Adult education class meets on Sunday mornings, from 10:45 am to 11:45 am September through May. The church brings in experts who make presentations and lead discussions related to social justice and spiritual growth. The topics for this class can be found under Upcoming Events in the What's Going On section of the menu or the Newsletter.

Koinonia is the name of the Bower Hill Women’s Bible Study group. Current members of the group will tell you that Koinonia is one of the best things going on at our church! We meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 until 10:30 in the Lounge from September through May.  Koinonia is a Greek word meaning “fellowship.”  While we come together to learn and to deepen our faith, equally important is the friendship and fellowship that we share with one another. Every year we look forward to adding new members to our group, so why not give it a try this year.  A strong Biblical background is not required …all you need is a desire to learn and to grow. If you are interested in joining the group, please call Kathy Philson at 412-531-7539.
