Hunger Awareness Event - Saturday, October 14, 2006

Summary of the Outcome of the Event

1. Overall $2068 was raised. The money will be split among Bread for the World, the Heifer Project, Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank and Washington City Mission. Thanks for all who donated their time and money.

2. Don Messer's speech was well received by those in attendance.

2. Over sixteen boxes of food were collected for the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

3. The Chinese Auction was a great success, having raised $330.00. Thanks to those who donated the items.

Event Description

Bower Hill's goal for this event is to raise people's awareness about Hunger and give them an opportunity to get connected or get involved. We will also be collecting food and raising money for local projects.  There will be projects for children and adults of all ages and interests to participate in.  The event is in support of World Food Day which is October 16.

Speaker
Donald Messer, one of the authors of the book Ending Hunger Now - A challenge to Persons of Faith, will the guest speaker for the event. Don co-authored this book with George McGovern and Bob Dole. Don is Henry White Warren Professor of Practical Theology and President Emeritus at The Hiff School of Theology in Denver, where he directs the Center for the Church and Global AIDS.

Book Signing
Donald Messer, one of the authors of the book Ending Hunger Now - A challenge to Persons of Faith, will be signing books.

Lunch Fund Raiser including Empty Bowl Project
Purchase a lunch with the money going toward hunger projects. You will also be given a basket to collect coins to donate in the future toward hunger relief projects. The bowl is part of the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank's Empty Bowl Project.

Global Gift Fair
Purchase items from Greater Gift. This group brings you fair trade handcrafts and foods from around the world. They strive to promote living wages, women's rights and eco-friendly production through their partnerships with small-scale artisan and farmer groups. No child exploitation is used to make their products. Greater Gift

Heifer International - Petting Zoo
This project allows you to choose a meaningful gift to give a loved one and help children and families around the world receive training and animal gifts that help them become self-reliant. Heifer Project. The petting Zoo is a great event for the kids. Animals such as sheep, rabbits, goats, etc. will be available for petting.

Coffee House
You will have the opportunity to buy fresh brewed coffee made from fair trade coffee purchased thru the Presbyterian Coffee project. Fair trade coffee by the bag will be available. This project allows farmers to be able to sell coffee at a price where they can make a profit. Presbyterian Coffee Project

Food Preparation for the Washington City Mission
We will be preparing bag lunches for the Washington City Mission which is a shelter in Washington, PA. No cooking will be required.

Chinese Auction
Bid on five different theme baskets. All donations go toward hunger projects. The themes for the baskets are Starbucks, Chocolates, Pirate BaseBall and two others to be determined.

Food Collection for the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank
We will be collecting non perishable food for the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Information about the Food Bank and activities for children will be available.

World Vision
A representative from World Vision will have information and activities about their organization.

Letter Writing
We will be writing letters to congressmen and senators urging them to be more supportive of programs targeting the relief of hunger. Kids will be able to design cards.
