Spiritual Growth

Our ministries are supported by using the time, talent and financial resources of our members, pastors and staff.

Children's Programs and Education

Baptism
Baptism, the sign of entry into the Christian Church, is offered once in a lifetime for either infants or adults on a requested date. Both Pastor consultation and Session approval are prerequisites for this sacrament.

Confirmation Classes
For eight/ninth graders considering the meaning of becoming a church member, weekly confirmation classes are held from September through May on Sunday mornings. A service of confirmation is held at the completion of the class.

Infant
Childcare for infants to age 2 is available on Sundays from 9:00 am until 11:15 am in our Nursery near the sanctuary. Ask an usher for directions.

Pre-School thru 7th
Classes for pre-school through seventh grade meet from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Children
in grades 4-7 attend worship with their parents. Children in grades pre-school thru 3rd grade may attend "Kids Own Worship" from 10:15 am to 11:15 am in the library. This schedule runs September through May.

Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School takes place for one week each summer for children entering kindergarten through grade six. It is a theme based Bible school, which runs in late June or early July. Adults have as much fun as the kids. Wouldn't you like to take part as an adult staff member, teen helper, or student? Watch for details in the church newsletter. More Details

Youth Group
There are youth activities for middle school and high school students on various days
and times during the year. See the newsletter and bulletin for times. These activities include snacks and are run by our youth leader. Junior/Senior High Fellowship
involves retreats, recreational outings and service projects. A week-long Senior High Work Trip takes place in the summer.

Youth Sunday School
Youth Church School classes for grades 9 - 12 meet each Sunday from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. They can attend the 10:15 am service with their family.

Adult Education

Adult Education
The Adult education class meets on Sunday mornings, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am September through May. The church brings in experts who make presentations and lead discussions related to social justice and spiritual growth. The topics for this class can
be found in the News/Events section of the website or the Newsletter.

Koinonia

koinonia Koinonia is the name of the Bower Hill Women’s Bible Study group. We meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:00 until 10:30 in the Lounge.  Koinonia is a Greek word meaning “fellowship.”  While we come together to learn and to deepen our faith, equally important is the friendship and fellowship that we share with one another. Every year we look forward to adding new members to our group, so why not give it a try this year.  A strong Biblical background is not required …all you need is a desire to learn and to grow.

Koinonia will resume this fall on September 12.  We will be using Devotional Classics, edited by Richard J. Foster, to guide our discussions.  Devotions by C.S. Lewis, St. Augustine, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Evelyn Underhill and Soren Kierkegaard are included, to name a few.  As Richard Foster writes, these devotions “aim at transformation of the human personality.  They seek to touch the heart, to address the will, to mold the mind.  They call for radical character formation.  They instill holy habits.”  Sounds like we should have a lot to discuss!

Please join us! If you are interested, give Betsy Hohlfelder a call at 412-341-1029 so that she can order you a book and answer any questions you might have about Koinonia.
